Dr. Mohamed Attia El-Fayoumi, Head of the Housing Committee in the House of Representatives, confirmed that the government has been given a deadline to present a draft law regarding old rent. He pointed out that the parliament would take over the matter if the government did not submit its proposal.
During a phone interview on the “Honorable Citizen” program, El-Fayoumi stated that the Constitutional Court has set a timeframe for issuing the old rent law before the end of the current parliamentary session. This necessitates legislative intervention before the deadline.
He added, “The ruling of the Supreme Constitutional Court is binding on all state institutions according to the constitution. We will present a draft law on old rent if the government does not submit its proposal.”
El-Fayoumi clarified that having a transitional period for increasing old rent does not conflict with the Supreme Constitutional Court’s ruling. The rent value will gradually increase, whereas the court ruling explicitly addresses the unconstitutionality of fixed rental values.
