Sherif El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, announced that applications will open for tenants who meet the conditions stipulated in the law regulating the relationship between landlords and tenants, commonly known as the “Old Rent” Law. The application process for obtaining alternative units will begin on October 1 and will continue for three months. Applications can be submitted through an online platform launched by the Social Housing and Mortgage Finance Support Fund or via post offices located across the country.
The minister confirmed that citizens will be able to submit applications and complete procedures easily through the online platform or post offices. Applicants can create an electronic account to track the status of their applications and provide the required documents when needed.
El-Sherbiny clarified that this application period aims to register the number of applying tenants and classify them according to clear priorities. It also seeks to determine the required number of housing units for the targeted groups to ensure their availability before the six-year period stipulated in the new law comes to an end.
The minister noted that applications for housing units must be submitted by the original tenant or by those who have the rental contract extended to them, whether for residential or non-residential units. The application must include the property address and the preferred allocation system, such as subsidized rent, rent-to-own, or ownership through mortgage financing. Applicants must also specify the geographic area that best suits their needs.
