Cairo – Sheref El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and New Urban Communities, highlighted the urgent need for new housing in Egypt due to rapid population growth, which ranges between 1.5 and 2 million people annually. This growth requires the construction of around 300,000 housing units each year to accommodate the increasing population.
Speaking at a General Assembly session of the Egyptian Senate, chaired by Council President Abdel Wahab Abdel Razek, El-Sherbiny emphasized the government’s dedication to providing safe and well-planned housing. He noted significant efforts to revitalize unsafe and unplanned urban areas, including key projects in Al-Fustat Gardens, Magra El-Oyoun, and Maspero Triangle, which have been transforming these communities.
The Minister also praised the Hayah Karima (Decent Life) initiative for its transformative impact on rural Egypt, particularly in enhancing water supply and sanitation infrastructure. The initiative has played a crucial role in improving the quality of life for residents in these areas.
The session, which focused on proposed amendments to Egypt’s Unified Building Law, underlined the ministry’s continued efforts to address urban and housing challenges while ensuring the development of both urban and rural regions.
