Egypt’s 2024 Achievements in Water and Sanitation Services Highlighted

Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, reviewed the achievements of Egypt’s water and sanitation sector in 2024. The updates included completed and ongoing projects aimed at enhancing service coverage nationwide.

Major Accomplishments in 2024

The Ministry reported completing or advancing 1,408 water and sanitation projects (excluding the Decent Life Initiative) at a total cost of approximately EGP 138.2 billion. These projects aim to add a daily capacity of 9.6 million m³, comprising 7 million m³ for drinking water and 2.6 million m³ for wastewater. Additionally, 443 maintenance and network expansion projects were undertaken with an investment of EGP 11.6 billion, benefiting millions of citizens.

Under the Decent Life Initiative, the Ministry implemented 825 projects for water and sanitation at a cost of EGP 92.1 billion, contributing 1.47 million m³/day in capacity, including 0.68 million m³/day for water and 0.8 million m³/day for wastewater.

Coverage Milestones

  1. Drinking Water:
    • 99% national coverage of drinking water services by 2024.
    • Operational 3,050 water stations producing 30.5 million m³/day.
    • Expansion of water networks to a total length of 180,000 km.
  2. Sanitation Services:
    • Urban sanitation coverage rose to 96%, while rural areas achieved 48% coverage.
    • 588 wastewater treatment plants now operate with a combined capacity of 18.8 million m³/day.
    • Expansion of sewage networks reached a total length of 91,300 km.

Public-Private Partnerships

The Ministry is advancing seven wastewater and industrial treatment projects in partnership with the private sector, aligning with the State Ownership Policy Document. These initiatives represent part of a broader plan to deliver sustainable infrastructure solutions.

Conclusion

Minister El-Sherbiny emphasized that the Ministry’s commitment to infrastructure investment and public-private collaboration has significantly improved water and sanitation services. These efforts contribute to raising living standards and driving sustainable development across Egypt.
