Dr. Badr Abdel Aaty, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration, held a phone call with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as part of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s efforts to halt the ongoing military escalation between Israel and Iran. Ambassador Tamim Khallaf confirmed that the conversation also addressed ways to strengthen Egyptian-Russian relations. Both ministers praised the existing cooperation between their countries and emphasized the importance of reciprocal visits to enhance collaboration in economic, trade, and investment sectors.
The official spokesperson discussed the evolving regional situation amidst increasing military tension and its impact on regional security and stability. The two ministers stressed the importance of de-escalation and the pursuit of political and diplomatic solutions, reiterating that there is no military resolution to the crisis. They also reviewed the presidential communications between Presidents El-Sisi and Putin with other world leaders aimed at containing the escalation, achieving a ceasefire, and returning to negotiations as the only path to prevent the conflict from expanding.
Minister Lavrov commended the joint statement issued by 23 Arab and Islamic countries at Egypt’s initiative, which called for a ceasefire and the resumption of negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program. Both ministers also exchanged updates on their communications with regional leaders and U.S. officials aimed at curbing the escalation. The call reaffirmed the shared vision between Egypt and Russia on the need to de-escalate tensions, prevent chaos, and resume negotiations.
