Egypt to Share Affordable Housing Expertise with Kenya

Housing Minister Welcomes Kenyan President in Hadayek Al-Asimah

Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, Eng. Sherif El-Sherbiny, welcomed Kenyan President William Ruto and his delegation during their visit to Hadayek Al-Asimah to inspect the “Housing for All Egyptians” initiative. The visit aligns with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s directives to enhance cooperation and provide support to African nations.

El-Sherbiny highlighted Egypt’s extensive urban development experience, which includes constructing fourth-generation smart cities such as the New Administrative Capital and New Alamein, major expansions in water and sanitation infrastructure, and the rehabilitation of unsafe housing areas.

Housing for All Egyptians Initiative: A Model for Affordable Housing

Launched in 2024, the initiative aims to provide one million affordable housing units for low- and middle-income citizens. So far, 710,000 units have been completed, with another 292,000 under construction. The program has received EGP 79 billion in funding, with EGP 10.2 billion in direct subsidies, and is supported by 31 banks and mortgage finance companies.

During the visit, Mai Abdel Hamid, CEO of the Social Housing Fund, explained the financing mechanisms and subsidy options, ensuring accessibility for applicants. The initiative offers two unit sizes: 90m² and 75m², and integrates Green Architecture principles, with 55,000 eco-friendly units planned.

President William Ruto toured several housing models and praised Egypt’s efforts in providing high-quality, affordable housing while ensuring sustainable urban development.

Egypt and Kenya Strengthen Housing Cooperation

Earlier, El-Sherbiny signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Kenya’s Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development to enhance collaboration in housing and urban development. The signing took place in the presence of President El-Sisi and President Ruto, marking a new chapter in Egypt-Kenya bilateral relations.

The visit was attended by Mai Abdel Hamid, Eng. Kamal Bahgat (Deputy CEO of the Social Housing Fund), Eng. Ammar Mandour (Head of Hadayek Al-Asimah City Authority), and Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Minister, Dr. Musalia Mudavadi.
