Discussions continue around the proposed amendments to the Old Rent Law, as MP Tarek Shoukry, Deputy Chair of the Housing Committee in the House of Representatives, affirmed that the committee aims to strike a balance between the interests of landlords and tenants without causing harm to either party. He clarified that no approval has been granted for the proposal to evacuate apartments and expel tenants. Instead, he emphasized the importance of considering the rental value for landlords. Shoukry also urged all parties not to fall prey to rumors circulating about the law.
Tenants under the old rent system have submitted a final memorandum to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Presidency, demanding the removal of Article 5 from the proposed amendments to the Old Rent Law. Ayman Essam, head of the Tenants’ Association, stated that the memorandum addresses legal, economic, and security dimensions related to the amendments. He warned of the potential consequences of enforcing the law and proposed alternative solutions to safeguard tenants’ rights.
