Admiral Osama Rabie and the Minister of Housing Discuss the Possibility of Establishing Water Desalination Plants in Canal Cities

Admiral Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, met with Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, to explore opportunities for strengthening cooperation on several developmental and service projects in the Canal cities. The meeting was held at the Authority’s headquarters in the Guidance Building in Ismailia Governorate, in the presence of Admiral Ashraf Atwa, Vice Chairman of the Authority.

The meeting was attended by leaders from the Suez Canal Authority, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Housing, the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater, the Water and Wastewater Regulatory Agency, and the Public-Private Partnership Unit at the Ministry of Finance.

During the discussions, both sides reviewed the water needs of the Canal cities and examined the proposed plans to implement national projects aimed at establishing water desalination plants in the region.

This step comes in line with the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to develop the service infrastructure across various sectors and to ensure the future provision of drinking water for citizens.

At the beginning of the meeting, Admiral Osama Rabie affirmed that the Suez Canal Authority is a key partner in providing water for the Canal cities. He highlighted the Authority’s constant commitment to enhancing its societal role through coordination with relevant entities to support national service projects and meet citizens’ future needs. He also pointed out that the Authority has extensive experience in drinking water purification technologies that comply with the latest international standards, reflecting its longstanding dedication to its community role. He further emphasized the special attention given by the political leadership and the Egyptian government to water-related issues.

For his part, Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny praised the strong cooperation with the Suez Canal Authority across various fields, affirming the Ministry’s commitment to expanding the establishment of seawater desalination plants in line with the directives of the political leadership. He explained that this approach aims to increase water production to meet growing demand using the latest technologies and through collaboration with the private sector. He also noted that the Ministry is working to localize desalination-related industries and reduce production costs.

During the meeting, discussions were held on the proposed study to establish water desalination plants in partnership with the private sector across the three Canal cities. It was agreed to form a joint working group from both sides to hold regular meetings in order to finalize plans and detail the project’s implementation aspects.
