Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi stated that the water issue is being used as a means to pressure Egypt in order to achieve other objectives, emphasizing that Cairo is fully aware of such attempts. He affirmed that Egypt is committed to the principle of non-interference in the affairs of others and refrains from engaging in sabotage or conspiracies, instead always striving toward construction and development. He stressed the importance of overcoming conflicts that have historically burdened Africa.
During a joint press conference with the Ugandan President at the Ittihadiya Palace, El-Sisi clarified that Egypt does not oppose the development of Nile Basin countries as long as it does not affect Egypt’s share of the water. He pointed out that the total water available in the White Nile and Blue Nile Basin amounts to around 1,600 billion cubic meters annually, with most of this quantity lost due to natural factors such as forests, swamps, evaporation, and groundwater, while only a small portion reaches the Nile River.
He added that Egypt and Sudan benefit from around 85 billion cubic meters annually, which is about 4% of the basin’s total water. El-Sisi explained that Egypt’s available water resources are extremely limited, relying almost entirely on the Nile River due to the lack of significant rainfall or alternative sources. He concluded by stressing that losing this portion of water would directly threaten the lives of Egyptians.
