The official gazette published Presidential Decree No. 31 of 2025, issued by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, approving the “Agreement for the Preparation of a Roadmap to Reduce Methane Emissions in Egypt.” The agreement was signed between the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation and the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, with a grant value of $959,006 USD, subject to ratification.
The agreement outlines plans to quantify current methane emissions in the petroleum sector and to establish specific reduction targets along with a timeline to achieve them.
It also prioritizes two key projects for immediate implementation aimed at curbing methane emissions. In addition, the agreement includes the development of proposals for legislation or internal policies to support emission reduction efforts within the sector.
This initiative is part of the executive steps announced by President El-Sisi to contribute to the reduction of methane emissions in the petroleum sector. It also aligns with Egypt’s commitment to the Global Methane Pledge in the oil and gas domain.
