Parliament Approves Amendments to the Old Rent Law in Principle

The House of Representatives has given its preliminary approval to the draft amendment of the Old Rent Law during a session chaired by Counselor Dr. Hanafy Gebaly. Major General Ahmed Al-Awadi, Chairman of the Defense and National Security Committee, emphasized the state’s commitment to achieving social justice for the most vulnerable groups, praising the Housing Committee’s efforts in balancing the interests of all concerned parties.

He noted that President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has always shown special care for ordinary citizens, highlighting the slum development project as a clear example—a project that has brought about a significant urban transformation in many areas across the country. In this context, the Chairman of the Defense Committee in Parliament called for extending the transitional period before the expiration of old rent contracts from 7 to 10 years. Major General Ahmed Al-Awadi stressed the importance of developing a clear plan to provide alternative housing for those affected by the amendments to the Old Rent Law.
