International Conference on Urban Development Highlights Green and Sustainable Building

On Saturday evening, December 16, 2024, Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, inaugurated the International Conference of the National Research Center for Housing and Building (NHBRC) on behalf of Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly. The event marked the NHBRC’s 70th anniversary under the theme “Future Perspectives and Urban Development Challenges: Smart and Sustainable Green Building Between the Present and the Future.”

Focus on Green Building and Sustainability

The conference, held in collaboration with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), aimed to explore strategies for achieving sustainable development goals, particularly through green and sustainable building practices.

In his speech, Minister El-Sherbiny highlighted global estimates indicating that buildings account for over 34% of energy consumption, contributing significantly to carbon emissions. He emphasized Egypt’s commitment to urban sustainability as part of its Egypt Vision 2030. The strategy aligns with global objectives, including the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 11, which focuses on creating inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities.

National Strategies and Initiatives

Minister El-Sherbiny underscored Egypt’s launch of various national strategies, including the Framework Strategy for Green Urban Development, unveiled by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi during the World Urban Forum. This roadmap emphasizes energy efficiency, resource management, and eco-friendly construction to enhance economic outcomes and citizens’ quality of life.

Additionally, the Ministry of Housing, in partnership with the United Nations Human Settlements Program, launched the Resilient Cities Initiative, which prioritizes green building. This initiative has seen collaboration with countries such as the UAE, Azerbaijan, and Brazil.

Achievements and Future Plans

Since 2014, Egypt has delivered over 1.5 million housing units for low- and middle-income citizens, addressing the growing demand for affordable housing. Looking ahead to 2030, the ministry plans to scale up green building projects, incentivizing the real estate sector to adopt sustainable practices. Public-private partnerships are being developed to support this transition, along with new incentives aimed at fostering green construction.

Technological Integration

The minister stressed the role of modern technologies, such as AI and smart systems, in enhancing sustainability. The conference sessions included discussions on topics like sustainable infrastructure, AI applications in construction, and waste management practices.

Recognition and Achievements

The event also featured an exhibition showcasing the contributions of the Ministry of Housing, affiliated institutions, and leading private entities in urban development. Minister El-Sherbiny received a commemorative shield on behalf of the Prime Minister, recognizing the significant role of the NHBRC in advancing Egypt’s construction sector over the past 70 years.

The conference served as a platform for exchanging local and international expertise, addressing challenges, and reinforcing Egypt’s dedication to sustainable urban development.
